Entries are judged by the following criteria:
“Interpretation of Theme” is weighted most heavily. This is what makes the National PTA Reflections Arts Program unique. A well-developed concept is more important than technique. If two entries are tied, the entry with the higher score for interpretation of theme receives more recognition. Use the provided rubric to keep your scores consistent. Entries should be judged primarily on how well the student uses his or her artistic vision to portray the 2019-20 theme: “Look Within."

Title: "Pouncing Tiger" Grade: 4 Category: Visual Arts Medium: Watercolor on paper Artist Statement: "My art relates to the theme because when I look within I see a Tiger and that Tiger is sitting in a pagoda all alone, only nature surrounding it. Why I see that is because I love nature and being alone in it. Why I see a Tiger is because I was born in the year of the Tiger, I was born in 2010." |

Title: "Life" Grade: Kindergarten Category: Photography Medium: Mixed Media and Photography Artist Statement: "I explored my garden and took photographs of all the colorful, beautiful things I saw. I wanted to take a close look within nature. When I did, I found a shell hidden in the plants. I saw that shell as a home for a snail. In a pile of hay I found a grasshopper staying safe. In nature there is always more to see if you take time to really look within." |

Title: "Looking Into Feelings: Grade: 3 Category: Visual Arts Medium: Colored Pens on Paper and collage Artist Statement: "Never judge people by the way they look, but by what they do. If you do judge them about how they look, you won’t get to know them better. You might miss out on making friends when you judge. If you don’t compare the way someone looks on the outside, by the way they dress or how their skin appears, then you are able to find out who they are on the inside. This piece of art shows a popular girl. She looks pretty, but others don’t know what is going on. That’s just one half showing her appearance. The other half shows that she is feeling sad and getting picked on. If you look at her right side, that is her physical appearance. On her left side I drew mini stories that show her feeling sad, which you can’t tell just by looking on the outside. Clearly, you never know the personality of others until you get to know them." |

Title: "Looking Through the Hole" Grade: 4 Category: Photography Medium: Photo mounted on wooden panel Artist Statement: "We look within to be peaceful, calm, and to understand things. You can look inside your body to see how you are feeling. I took this photograph to represent a portal that lets you look within. You look through the hole to understand yourself." |
